Norwich Rotary carnival returning to Brown Park for Memorial Day weekend

Norwich — The Norwich Rotary carnival will return to Norwich Harbor on Memorial Day weekend, thanks to a last-minute agreement among city officials who received complaints from local veterans that a plan to host the carnival at Chelsea Parade would interfere with Memorial Day services.

The city's veterans' memorial monuments are at the north end of the parade, and the Memorial Day Parade runs along Broadway.

The City Council voted unanimously Monday to allow the Rotary carnival to be located at the Howard T. Brown Memorial Park at Norwich Harbor. The carnival placement there, however, will mean closure of the city's boat launch during a popular holiday weekend for boating and fishing. The carnival had been held for several years at Brown Park before moving to other locations in the downtown area.

Rotary member Bonnie Hong told the council that the most recent location on the Viaduct parking lot was unsafe, with live railroad tracks adjacent to the lot, and little parking.

Alderman Gerald Martin, chairman of the Harbor Management Commission, said he's not in favor of keeping the carnival at Brown Park in the future, but agreed to the location for this year to not interfere with the Memorial Day ceremonies.
