Democrat Derell Wilson to run for mayor in Norwich

Norwich – Democrat Derell Q. Wilson said Thursday he will announce plans to run for mayor on Saturday.

Wilson will make the announcement at 1 p.m. Saturday in front of the Buckingham Memorial Building at 307 Main St.

Wilson, 25, a lifelong Norwich resident, is a newcomer to city elections but has held numerous offices since he was a youth in the NAACP locally and statewide. He served as local NAACP Youth Council president, and was president of the NAACP State Conference of Youth and College Divisions.

Wilson currently works as a site coordinator for the Norwich Public Schools’ Aspire after-school program at Kelly Middle School.

In his press release announcement, Wilson said he is “ready to take on the challenge of reviving and rebuilding a city in desperate need of fresh ideas and new leadership.”

Wilson’s twin brother, Terell Wilson, served one term as an alderman from 2013 to 2015. Terell Wilson died of injuries he suffered when his vehicle was struck head on by a wrong-way driver on Interstate 95 in Milford on April 16, 2016.

Derell Wilson said he “will move the city forward in an ethical, transparent and inclusive way.”

Using the slogan, "Our City, Our Voice," Wilson said he wants Norwich residents to feel that their voices matter and will be heard and said he would “bring together all parts of the city as one cohesive unit, working together to be the most efficient city that Norwich can be.”

Wilson will become the first Democrat to enter the race officially, although Alderman H. Tucker Braddock said recently he is considering a run for mayor this year.

Former Mayor and current City Council President Pro Tempore Peter Nystrom announced March 4 that he will seek the Republican nomination to run for mayor this fall.
