Farmers, vendors invited to New London, Groton market lunch

New London — The New London and Groton Field of Greens Farmers’ Market will launch its 2017 season with an informational luncheon for farmers and other vendors at noon May 3 at Ledge Light Health District offices at 216 Broad St.

The meeting will include an orientation to the Field of Greens Market. An important update on public health guidelines for farmers’ markets and food vendors will be given by Ryan McCammon, the district’s senior sanitarian, according to a news release from the health district.

“The market is in search of local farmers, food producers, and a variety of vendors who are interested in participating in this great mission, of connecting with our community, providing wholesome foods, and in exchange, an opportunity to sell locally grown, farm-raised and hand-made products,” Art Costa, president of Thames Valley Sustainable Connections, said in a news release.

This year, the Field of Greens Markets will offer two seasonal markets, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays at Washington Park in Groton from July 11 through Oct. 31; and 3 to 6 p.m. on Fridays at Williams Park at Broad and Williams streets in New London from July 7 through Oct. 27.

“We are particularly excited to host special days, with even more vendors, at the market for families and seniors, made possible by a grant from the USDA to support local agriculture and promote healthy eating,” said Cindy Barry, farmers market program coordinator.

Family Day will take place on July 25 in Groton and July 28 in New London and Senior Day will take place on Aug. 25 in New London and Aug. 29 in Groton.

In addition to farmers, the markets are also seeking vendors of a variety of value-added products, such as poultry, eggs, baked goods, jams and jellies, honey and syrups, dairy, meats and seafood. Authors, artists, crafters, soap makers, food trucks, community organizations and musicians are also encouraged to participate in this year’s market.

Vendor guidelines and applications can be found at www.newlondonfieldofgreens.org.

New London Field of Greens Famers’ Market is a certified Connecticut Grown market and an initiative of Thames Valley Sustainable Connections.
