Salem to vote on $15.1 million budget Wednesday

Salem — Residents will vote Wednesday to approve the 2017-18 budget.

Voting for the $15.1 million budget, a 1.27 percent decrease from last year, will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Town Hall located at 270 Hartford Road.

The general budget is $3,693,384, a 0.21 percent decrease from last year. Capital expenditures is budgeted for $828,242, a 4.24 percent decrease. The school budget is $10,548,225, a 1.4 percent decrease.

The reductions were in response to financial uncertainty at the state level. Salem is projected to lose about $700,000 in state funding, so the Board of Finance decided to help offset the slated cuts with cuts to town and school budgets, money from the unassigned fund balance and a one-mill tax increase.

Last year's referendum included advisory questions about the budget amounts. Most voters said the town budget and capital expenditures were about right, while about half said the school budget was too high.
