Annual Child and Family Agency tag sale down to final day

New London — Saturday is the final day of the Child & Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut's 63rd Annual Tag Sale, and the organization is seeking community support to help make a dent in the clothing, furniture and other items that have filled the New London Armory, 249 Bayonet St.

Most items are 50 percent off on Saturday to ensure they are sold. As of Friday afternoon, a significant amount of the items collected during the two weeks of intake events run by the six auxiliary locations still was there.

The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The sale, which typically nets about $60,000 over the three days, supports the agency's programs for children and families in New London County. Krissa Beene, development associate with Child & Family Agency, said the money raised is a huge help to their programs.

The profits can be used wherever there is a gap in funding, she said, such as the school-based health centers or summer camp scholarships for children in the counseling program.

In addition to the vast main space full of clothing, Beene said there are three other rooms in the armory that are filled with items for the sale. She said the hallways also are lined with art, and most of the furniture is outside the building because there's no space inside.

If everything isn't sold Saturday, area nonprofits and shelters are invited to select items they need, such as school uniforms for children or suits for homeless people seeking job interviews. After that, high-end items are kept for next year or given to consignment shops, and the rest is donated to Goodwill.
