Jon Oldfield files petition to run for mayor

Norwich — Unaffiliated petitioning candidate Jon Oldfield will join two Democrats and one Republican thus far in the race for mayor.

Oldfield, who ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2005 and for City Council in 2001 and 2003, filed a petition with the required 46 names to secure a ballot spot this fall as a petitioning mayoral candidate. Oldfield also filed paperwork with the state Elections Enforcement Commission to form the “Oldfield for Mayor” committee.

Oldfield said Monday he is not yet ready to discuss his campaign, but will host a campaign kickoff rally at 10 a.m. June 3 in the plaza outside City Hall. The public is invited.

To date Democrats Derell Wilson and Alderman H. Tucker Braddock, along with Republican former Mayor and current Council President Pro Tempore Peter Nystrom have announced plans to run for mayor.

Oldfield filed three ethics complaints last fall against Mayor Deberey Hinchey and former utilities commission Chairwoman Dee Boisclair and Vice Chairman Robert Groner over their participation in a controversial trip to the Kentucky Derby in May 2016 hosted and paid for by the Connecticut Municipal Electric Energy Cooperative. The three, along with trip participants Norwich Public Utilities General Manager John Bilda and NPU Division Manager Steve Sinko were found in violation of the city's ethics code.
