Lyme Democrats to interview Probate Court candidates on June 22

Lyme — The Lyme Democratic Town Committee announced Monday that it will interview four Democratic candidates for the soon-to-be-vacant position of probate court judge at 8 p.m. June 22 in the Lyme Town Hall. The public is invited to attend the meeting.

Four candidates — James Carey, Sean Donlan, Jeannine Lewis and Steven Sheehan — each will deliver a five-minute presentation and respond to questions from the committee during a brief question and answer period, according to the announcement.

The Probate Court located in Old Saybrook serves Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Saybrook and Westbrook. Probate judges handle estates, trusts, adoptions, name changes and the termination of parental rights and conservatorships, among other matters.

Terrance Lomme, the current probate judge, is retiring on July 18, according to the news release.

The four candidates are making similar appearances before other Democratic Town Committees in the district, the release states. Each committee will send delegates to vote at a nominating convention, where the official candidate of the Democratic Party will be selected. The candidate will compete in a Sept. 12 primary, if there are other Democratic contenders. The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican and other candidates in the special election on Nov. 7.

The winner of the special election will serve the remainder of Lomme’s term, which ends Jan. 9, 2019.
