NPU to install gas piping near City Hall next week

Norwich — Norwich Public Utilities will install the piping and infrastructure for an underground natural gas regulating station at the intersection of Broadway and Chestnut Street in front of City Hall during evening and overnight hours next week.

Construction will take place between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., beginning June 18 and running through Friday morning, June 23. This nighttime work schedule will minimize any impact on traffic downtown and will not require any roads to be closed, NPU spokesman Chris Riley said.

The regulating station, which will be installed in August, will measure 6 feet by 15 feet and will be underground in the grass median at the foot of Broadway, adjacent to Chestnut Street. Once the project is completed, any affected sections of the road will be milled and paved.

The new station will help improve the efficiency of NPU’s natural gas system that serves homes and businesses in the downtown area and help NPU to meet increased natural gas demand in the city, Riley said.
