A Waterford native is now second-in-charge at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS.

Special Agent Samuel Worth has been appointed as deputy director of NCIS after working for the agency for more than 27 years.

Worth most recently was responsible for the daily oversight and management of business operations and support functions, according to a news release announcing his appointment.

In the past, he's served as the personal security advisor to the secretary of the Navy and directed NCIS' actions to investigate and defeat criminal threats to the Navy, among other roles.

Worth is a graduate of Waterford High School and of Norwich University in Northfield, Vt., where he graduated magna cum laude in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice. He's received the Navy's Distinguished Civilian Service and Meritorious Civilian Service awards.
