Aunt of 13 siblings allegedly held captive by parents says their father made her ‘uncomfortable’

The aunt of 13 siblings found shackled and malnourished in their California home admitted the several months she previously spent living with their parents made her feel “uncomfortable.”

Elizabeth Jane Flores, in a tearful interview with “Good Morning America,” said she was “shocked” to learn her sister, 49-year-old Louise Anna Turpin, was arrested alongside her 57-year-old husband, David Allen Turpin, for allegedly abusing and holding their children — ages 2 to 29 — captive in their Perris home.

Flores noted that while she hasn’t had a relationship with her sister for nearly 20 years, she did live with the family for a few months while she was in college. The couple only had four children at the time, the eldest of whom was still in elementary school.

“I thought they were really strict, but I didn’t see any type of abuse,” she told “GMA.”

While she was there, Flores said she was “treated like one of the kids” and was forced to follow strict “rules,” but it was her brother-in-law that truly left her feeling “uncomfortable.”

“If I were to get in the shower, he would come in there while I was in there and watch, and it was like a joke,” Flores recalled. “He never touched me or anything.”

Outside of those few months, Flores said she was “never allowed to be part of their lives.” She recalled how her parents flew out to see their grandchildren several times, only to be turned away in tears every time.

Authorities on Monday arrested David and Louise Turpin after their 17-year-old daughter managed to escape her dungeonlike home and phone 911.

When police arrived at the residence off Muir Woods Road, the siblings “appeared to be malnourished and very dirty,” according to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department. Three of them were chained and padlocked to furniture.

Police charged the pair with nine counts of torture and 10 counts of child endangerment. They were each being held on a $9 million bond.

Flores also tearfully addressed her nieces and nephews in the interview, saying that she hoped to connect with them despite being shut of their lives for so long.

“I want to reach out to the kids. I want them to know that for years we begged to Skype,” she said during her Good Morning America appearance, “we begged to see them, the whole family.”
