New York City's $5.9 million settlement with the family of Eric Garner, an unarmed black man who died after being put in a white police officer's chokehold, follows several other million-dollar-plus payouts the city has approved in the last two years to resolve claims of police brutality, wrongful conviction and mistreatment in jail. Among them:

DAVID RANTA: Man exonerated in the 1990 killing of a rabbi after spending 23 years in prison; $6.4 million settlement in February 2014.

CENTRAL PARK FIVE: Five teenagers who were wrongly convicted in the 1989 rape and beating of a Central Park jogger and who served six to 13 years in prison before their convictions were thrown out in 2002 because evidence linked someone else to the crime; settlement totaling $40 million announced in June 2014, approved by judge in September 2014.

RONALD SPEAR: Rikers Island inmate who died after what his attorneys said was a beating by officers who kicked him in the head; $2.75 million settlement with his family in July 2014.

JABBAR COLLINS: Man who spent 16 years behind bars for the 1994 killing of a rabbi before his conviction was overturned when it emerged that a key witness had recanted before trial; $10 million settlement in August 2014.

JEROME MURDOUGH: Mentally ill former Marine who died after being left unattended for hours in a Rikers Island cell that sweltered to 101 degrees because of a faulty heating system; $2.25 million settlement with his family in October 2014.

ROBERT HILL, ALVENA JENNETTE, DARRYL AUSTIN: Three half brothers who spent a combined 60 years in prison before their murder convictions were overturned amid questions about a now-retired detective's tactics; settlement totaling $17 million in January 2015. Austin's share went to his mother because he had died.

RAMARLEY GRAHAM: Unarmed black teenager killed by a white police officer in Graham's home; $3.9 million settlement with his family in January 2015.

JONATHAN FLEMING: Man exonerated after 25 years behind bars in a killing that happened while he was more than 1,000 miles away vacationing at Disney World; $6.25 million settlement in June 2015.

ANGEL RAMIREZ: Rikers Island inmate who died after what his lawyers said was a beating by jail guards in an area without surveillance cameras after a confrontation; $1.25 million settlement with his family in June 2015.
