Rhode Island ACLU raises concerns over law targeting sex offenders
PROVIDENCE — The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union says it will challenge a new law prohibiting some registered sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school.
The ACLU of Rhode Island said Thursday it plans to file a lawsuit within the month. The civil liberties group says there's no evidence the restriction will be beneficial to the community.
Law enforcement officials last week told level III registered sex offenders living within 1,000 feet of a school they must find new homes by Nov. 2 or face jail time.
The General Assembly in June passed the law increasing the distance to 1,000 feet from 300. The law applies to level III sex offenders who are deemed most likely to again be sex offenders.
