    Woonsocket police chief announces retirement

Woonsocket, R.I. — The longtime police chief in Woonsocket is retiring.

The Call reported that Chief Thomas Carey announced his retirement on Tuesday.

Carey was appointed to the job in 2008 after spending 26 years in the police department in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The mayor at the time, Susan Menard, said she picked an outsider who could give the department a "fresh start."

The previous chief and his deputy resigned amid allegations that they changed scores on police exams to get the former chief's ex-wife on the force.

Carey says he wants to spend more time with his family in Florida.
