Death of Cranston, R.I., fire victim considered a possible homicide

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — The death of a woman found inside a burning home is being treated as a homicide, the police chief in Cranston said on Saturday.

Col. Michael J. Winquist said his department is also looking for a man who was spotted by witnesses leaving the site of Friday night's blaze on Marcy Street and then running down the road.

The victim, identified as Aliss Collins, was found by firefighters inside a third-floor apartment of the burning house. The 32-year-old pregnant mother was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Winquist said the unborn child also did not survive.

Winquist told the Providence Journal that firefighters were suspicious about the condition of the woman's apartment.

"Things were somewhat out of place in their opinion," he said. "We're treating it as a homicide. We don't know the manner and cause of death at this point."

Police are awaiting autopsy results from the Rhode Island State Medical Examiner's Office.

Winquist told the newspaper that police do not know whether the man observed leaving the scene is connected to the incident. The person is described as a black male, approximately 240 pounds, wearing an orange or red hooded sweatshirt and black shorts.

Winquist said the Collins lived at the Marcy Street apartment with a roommate.

Residents who lived in the building's second-floor apartment were able to escape unharmed, Winquist said. The fire was contained to the third floor while the first floor was vacant.

Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Cranston Police.
