Groton― A car fire on the northbound span of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge helped slow traffic on Interstate 95 Friday aftenoon.

Firefighters from both the City of Groton and New London fire departments responded to the 1:18 p.m. fire, which occurred in the breakdown lane on the right side of the bridge. The fire, which firefighters said had full engulfed the engine compartment of the vehicle, was quickly extinguished by New London firefighters. No injuries were reported.

One lane of the bridge was already closed due to an ongoing construction project and traffic on the highway was backed up for more than an hour as a result of the fire.
