Teen driver charged in Pawcatuck crash

Stonington — Two teens escaped injury Wednesday morning when the car in which they were riding struck a curb at a high speed in front of Brookside Village on Route 1.

The driver, a 16-year-old male, was charged with reckless driving, speeding, using a motor vehicle without the owner’s permission and disobeying the signal of a police officer.

A 16-year-old girl was a passenger in the car.

According to police, the father of the driver called them to say his son had taken the car without his permission. The teen was driving west on Route 1 in Pawcatuck about 9:30 a.m. when he passed a police cruiser heading east.

Police said the teen then accelerated when he saw the officers, who did not chase the car but reported its direction on the radio to headquarters, which is just west of Brookside Village.

The teen lost control of the car in front of Brookside Village, damaging the passenger side and disabling the car.

The crash occurred just across the street from the spot where an 18-year-old Pawcatuck man was killed in 2007 when the car in which he was a passenger was racing another car along Route 1 and struck a light pole in front of the former Tim Horton’s coffee shop while traveling 74 miles per hour.
