Jury selection to begin in New London murder case

Jury selection begins Tuesday in New London Superior Court in the case of Davion Smith, the accused accomplice in the November 2011 murder of Jorge "Loco" Rosa in New London.

Smith, 22, has pleaded not guilty to murder, home invasion and first-degree burglary. His co-defendant, Evan T. Holmes, was found guilty at a trial in October 2013 and sentenced to 70 years in prison.

The trial is scheduled to begin May 26 before Judge Barbara Bailey Jongbloed.

According to testimony at Holmes' trial, Holmes and Smith, who were close friends, forced their way into Rosa's Montauk Avenue apartment during the early morning hours of Nov. 12, 2011. Holmes had been involved in a fight with Rosa's roommate, Todd "T.O." Silva, a short time earlier at a downtown after-hours club. Silva was not home. Holmes and Smith entered Rosa's bedroom, where Rosa was asleep with Holmes' ex-girlfriend. Holmes shot Rosa 10 times, according to testimony. Rosa, who was 25, died a short time later.

New London police arrested Holmes hours later at an Old Saybrook motel. Smith spent the next four months at large and was arrested in March 2012 after he attempted to crawl out a second-floor window of a New London apartment. He has been held in lieu of $1 million since his arrest.

Though he is not believed to be the shooter, Smith faces up to 60 years for murder if convicted.

Smith is represented by attorney Jeremiah Donovan. Senior Assistant State's Attorney Paul J. Narducci is prosecuting.
