Man arrested after alleged threat to personnel at Norwich elementary school

Norwich — A man perturbed by the fact that his vehicle was towed caused a lockdown at a Norwich elementary school on Tuesday, police said.

At 3:15 p.m., Norwich police said they received a call from officials at the Thomas W. Mahan Elementary School, 94 Salem Turnpike. Police were informed that the school was in lockdown because of a disturbance.

It was reported that a man entered the school and complained about his vehicle being towed from the school parking lot earlier in the day, according to a statement from Sgt. Christopher M. Conley. The man allegedly threatened school personnel and refused to leave.

School Superintendent Abby Dolliver said the man left the school “pretty quickly” and was later arrested by Norwich police. She and school Business Administrator Athena Nagel went to the school.

“Students were safe and briefly placed in a hold in their rooms,” Dolliver said. “Parents were contacted.”

Police arrested 56-year-old John Kornilief of 9 Cuprak Road, Norwich. Kornilief was charged with second-degree threatening, second-degree breach of peace and first-degree criminal trespass.

Kornilief is free on a $5,000 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear May 14 at Norwich Superior Court.
