    Motorcyclist arrested after fleeing police

A 25-year-old Preston man was arrested Thursday after he drove a motorcycle more than 100 miles per hour on the wrong side of the road while fleeing a traffic stop, according to a state police news release.

Steven H. Barrett, 25, of 253 Route 2A, Preston, was arrested at 6:04 p.m. Thursday on Military Highway in Groton. He is charged with reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer and driving an unregistered and uninsured motorcycle.

Police first saw Barrett driving a motorcycle at a high speed southbound at the Preston-Ledyard town line on Route 12 on May 15, the news release said. The officers tried to stop him but he “fled at speeds exceeding 120 mph, passing vehicles on the wrong side of the road and using the breakdown lane,” the release said.

Police stated that they didn’t chase him out of concern his recklessness during the pursuit would endanger the public.

On May 21, police again saw the motorcycle at the same time and place, and when troopers tried to stop him he fled, driving more than 100 mph in the wrong lane toward oncoming traffic, the release said.

Police didn’t chase him due to the danger, but other troopers near Naval Submarine Base New London saw him approach and turn onto Military Highway in Groton. The troopers caught up with Barrett, who then stopped and was arrested without further incident.

He is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on June 2.
