Crews rescue men from waters off Old Lyme

Kayakers paddle past DEEP Police, Old Lyme Fire-Rescue and SeaTow boats as they converge on a capsized boat, seen between the white and gray boats, that left two people in distress in Long Island Sound near the mouth of the Connecticut and Black Hall rivers shortly before 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 9, 2015, in Old Lyme. The two people in the water were rescued and assisted with the flipping over of their boat. (Steven Frischling/Special to The Day)

Old Lyme — Rescue crews plucked two men out of the water Thursday after their boat capsized off Griswold Point, near the mouth of the Connecticut River.

An individual on shore had reported seeing the two men, who were not wearing life vests, clinging to the side of the 14-foot aluminum boat about 7:20 p.m.

Old Lyme Fire Chief Tom Risom said the men were about 100 yards off shore when boats from the Old Lyme Fire Department, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Sea Tow arrived.

Old Lyme keeps a boat docked at the DEEP headquarters off Ferry Road.

DEEP personnel brought the two men to shore, where they declined medical treatment.
