Pedestrian struck by motor vehicle in New London Friday night

New London — A pedestrian was hit by a motor vehicle in the area of Blydenburg and Ocean avenues on Friday night.

The man suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken by Life Star helicopter to Yale-New Haven Hospital, according to city police.

When police responded to the area of the accident Friday night, witnesses at the scene told police that a vehicle heading south on Ocean Avenue struck a man who was in the travel portion of the roadway.

While fire department members began providing aid to the pedestrian and attempted to take him to the hospital, New London resident Edwin Alvarez began interfering with the first responders.

Police said they charged Alvarez, 56, of 127 Hempstead St., No. 904, with breach of peace and resisting arrest, after he refused to leave the area and continued to interfere with emergency personnel.

He also struggled with officers when he was placed under arrest, police said.

The incident took place at 9:22 p.m.

The pedestrian was first transported to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital before being transported to Yale-New Haven by Life Star.

The investigation is ongoing. Police ask anyone with information regarding the accident to call (860) 447-5269.
