Westerly police say former Norwich cop was in possession of stolen goods

Westerly — A former Norwich police officer who is a suspect in smash-and-grab style burglaries in Groton and Stonington is now facing charges of possessing stolen goods.

Westerly police on Wednesday charged Jamie Longolucco, 41, with two counts of receiving stolen goods following a tip from his ex-fiancée about some unusual activity and suspicious items appearing at her home, according to Westerly Police Chief Edward St. Clair.

Police said that among the items was a blue-framed blue lobster painting that was reported missing from the Finer Line Gallery in Mystic. Groton Town police already have charged Longolucco in connection with an Aug. 31, 2014, burglary at the gallery where a window was smashed and two paintings stolen.

Longolucco also was charged by Stonington police with burglarizing a jewelry and antiques shop on Water Street in Stonington borough. A front window was smashed in that incident as well. Meredith Soulia, 34, also was charged as an accomplice in that burglary.

Westerly police are still investigating whether some of the other items identified by Longolucco’s ex-fiancée, including a clarinet, had been stolen.

St. Clair said Longolucco’s ex-fiancée reached out to police after Longolucco took her car and left for several days. She Googled Longolucco’s name to find out about his past brushes with the law, he said.

Longolucco, who was fired from the Norwich police department in 2007 after several arrests, is due to appear July 21 in New London Superior Court. He faces burglary, larceny and criminal mischief charges.
