New London man charged with setting fire to occupied home in 2013

New London — Investigation by city police detectives has led to the arrest of a 35-year-old homeless man charged with setting the fire that burned an occupied home in 2013.

George Sawicki, whose last known address was at the New London Homeless Hospitality Center, is charged with first-degree arson in connection with a May 4, 2013, fire that severely damaged a home at 23 Moore Ave.

Police had arrived at the scene of the 6:12 a.m. fire to find two occupants trapped on the roof of a porch at the house.

One jumped off and the other was rescued by firefighters. Firefighters forced their way into the home to rescue a third occupant, who was treated at Lawrence + Memorial hospital for smoke inhalation.

The New London Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was intentionally set and found a can of stain near the rear staircase, where the fire originated and where ignitable liquids were detected by an arson dog.

Occupants of the home said Sawicki had been at the house the night before the fire but was sent away after drinking and becoming belligerent, according to a police report.

Police said after being told to leave he had returned at one point carrying a sickle.

Detectives were also able to obtain a copy of a text message from Sawicki to a resident of the home that read, “must be nice 2 watch (expletive) burn rlcnshp wise pick on little me wish u die burn into ashes,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit in the case.

Sawicki claims he suffers from schizophrenia. During an appearance in New London Superior Court on Friday he was ordered held in lieu of a $150,000 bond and under a mental health watch.

He is due back in court on Aug, 19.
