Court report: Woman left child unattended during attempt to burglarize home

A Mystic woman who allegedly broke into a Noank home earlier this month, and subsequently was arrested after an extensive police search of the neighborhood, was arrested last month by Stonington police after she left her daughter alone in a park to burglarize an area home, court records show.

Stonington police said they found Barbara Kuhn’s 8-year-old daughter on July 9 at 1 p.m. alone at the Mystic River Park at Washington and Willow streets, according to a probable cause report.

Police said that Kuhn of 22 Overlook Drive went to a vacant house at 24 Jackson Ave., where she was found hiding in a bathroom tub with the resident’s watch in her backpack.

Police also said that she hid a jar of coins and a charge cord by the toilet. The items were taken from a master bedroom.

She was charged with third-degree burglary, sixth-degree larceny and risk of injury to a minor.

The following month, Kuhn and Wayne Malinowsky, 29, of 26 Fitch Hill Road, Uncasville, were arrested by Groton Town police after the pair were accused of breaking into a home, and being chased off when the residents woke up.

Police said on Aug. 14 at 3:30 a.m. they were dispatched to a home on High Street for a report of a burglary in progress.

Police said the victim woke up when she heard her front door squeaking repeatedly back and forth, according to the Groton Town probable cause report.

The victim said she saw a bright light from a flashlight or cell phone moving from left to right along the front entrance wall. The victim said she heard the door slam shut and she yelled for her husband.

While canvassing the area, police found a car with a woman inside. Initially, the woman said she was just sleeping in her car, but later confessed to police that she was there with Kuhn and Malinowsky.

The woman called Malinowsky and was able to get his location, where police found him two hours after he allegedly committed the burglary.

Police said Malinowsky was in possession of a backpack that contained several laptops and a purse.

Police continued their search for Kuhn. At 9:08 a.m. police received a report of a second burglary in process in the area of Pearl Street. The suspect fit Kuhn’s description and had fled the area.

She was found two hours later at the intersection of New London Road and Judson Avenue. Police said she was wearing a baseball cap that she allegedly stole during the second burglary.

Groton police charged Kuhn with numerous burglary and larceny charges.

Police said the Kuhn and Malinowsky might be connected with a string of burglaries in southeastern Connecticut.

Court records show that Kuhn was ordered to undergo detox for substance abuse issues. She is being held on a total of $350,050 in bonds. Her next court date is scheduled for Sept. 2.
