    Motorcyclist dies in collision in Ledyard

    Ledyard - A motorcyclist died Monday evening following a head-on collision with a motor vehicle on Route 117 near Thomas Road.

    The Ledyard Fire Company was dispatched to Route 117, also known as Colonel Ledyard Highway, about 7:30 p.m. for a motor vehicle accident with fire. A vehicle and a motorcycle and both were on fire, impinging overhead utility lines.

    The two occupants of the vehicle escaped and Life Star helicopter was called for the motorcycle operator but was subsequently canceled. The driver of the motorcycle died at the scene, according to Ledyard fire officials.

    Two people were taken by Ledyard Ambulance and Poquetanuck Fire Department Ambulance to the hospital. The vehicle fires and a small brush fire were extinguished and the scene turned over to the Ledyard Police Department.

    Route 117 was closed following the accident for the Ledyard Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team to investigate. A detour was established by ConnDOT.

    No other details were available Monday night.

    Assisting the Ledyard Fire Department were the Gales Ferry Fire Company, Poquetanuck Fire Department, Ledyard Ambulance, American Ambulance Paramedic, L&M Hospital Paramedic and Eversource.
