Old Saybrook — State police shot a man at an Old Saybrook motel early Saturday morning after a standoff in which the man pointed a gun at police and refused police orders to drop the weapon, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel, police said. Police had not identified the suspect as of Saturday afternoon, saying the investigation is continuing.

The incident occurred at about 1 a.m. at the Econo Lodge at 1750 Post Road.

When police from Old Saybrook and Norwich arrived to investigate a report that a suspect in several recent investigations was at the motel, they found the man pointing a gun through a window, police said.

Several gunshots were heard from inside the motel room, police said.

Old Saybrook and Norwich police secured the area, and the state police Emergency Services Unit Tactical Team, known as SWAT, assisted in forming a barricade around the suspect's room, police said.

    The motel was evacuated.

SWAT officers then entered the motel room and located the suspect, police said.

The man pointed a gun at the officers, and ignored orders to drop his weapon.

At least one SWAT officer fired his weapon, striking the man, police said.

No injuries were reported to police or bystanders.

Detectives from the state police Eastern District Major Crime Squad responded to the scene, and are conducting the investigation, police said.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner also responded to the scene and is assisting with the investigation, including identification of the suspect.

A spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office said neither the identity nor cause of death had been determined as of 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
