Waterford man gets suspended sentence in drug, gun case

A Waterford man who was arrested on drug and firearms charges after fleeing from a motor vehicle stop in January received a suspended prison sentence Tuesday in New London Superior Court.

Alexander Esteves-Rosado, 28, who pleaded guilty to carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of narcotics, will be listed on the deadly weapon offender registry for five years.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Esteves-Rosado abandoned his car after New London police, who had him under surveillance, attempted to pull him over on Jan. 15 on Westwood Drive in New London.

Waterford police, who were assisting New London with the case, then learned Esteves-Rosado was under investigation by New London police for drug and firearm sales. Esteves-Rosado was taken into custody about a half-hour later as he attempted to enter his girlfriend's truck in Waterford near the town line with New London.

The girlfriend told police she was unaware of any illegal activity and consented to a search of the couple's home at 7 Sunniecrest Drive. Police said they found 4 grams of heroin, a rifle, two pistols and various types of ammunition.

Prosecutor Paul J. Narducci said at sentencing that he and attorney Kevin C. Barrs from the public defender's office had discussed the case many times during pretrial meetings and that a sentence of seven years in prison, fully suspended, followed by three years conditional discharge was a fair outcome given all the circumstances. He did not elaborate.
