Former Lisbon man charged with multiple sex assaults

Montville — A lengthy state police investigation led to the arrest Thursday of a former Lisbon man on charges he sexually assaulted multiple young girls, including family members, over the course of several years.

Douglas R. Crossley, 39, of 7961 Wynbrook Lane, Mechanicsville, Va., was arrested on a warrant prepared by the state police Eastern District Major Crime Squad at Troop E in Montville.

Crossley is charged with three counts of risk of injury to a minor, or illegal sexual contact with a victim under the age of 16, and three counts of second-degree sexual assault, or sexual assault on a person that is physically helpless.

Investigation into Crossley began May 6, 2013, when one of his alleged victims reported multiple incidents between 2003 and 2010 at Crossley’s former home at 23 Lee Ave. in Lisbon.

Police spoke to seven alleged victims and three witnesses, ranging in age from 11 to 20, as part of the investigation.

The alleged assaults took place during sleepovers at Crossley’s home and during monthly get-togethers hosted by Crossley and his wife at their Lisbon home, the victims claim.

The allegations range from inappropriate touching to claims that Crossley provided alcohol to girls and performed sexual acts on them.

Some of the inappropriate touching was witnesses by his wife, Danay Crossley, the victims told police, according to an arrest warrant affidavit in the case.

The girls told similar stories to police, that Crossley either had touched them sexually, watched them while they were showering, climbed in bed with them, provided them a prescription anxiety drug and alcohol or sent inappropriate text and Facebook messages.

“The Crossley’s [sic] were considered the cool relatives and would let them, along with their girlfriends, do things that their parents would never allow. These things included drinking hard alcohol, huffing and taking pills,” according to one victim’s statement.

Police interviewed Douglas and Danay Crossley in the presence of their attorney in Virginia on June 12, 2014, where they agreed to answer questions as long as there was no video or audio recordings and no written statements taken, police said.

Douglas Crossley denied any inappropriate sexual misconduct with any of the alleged victims, denied giving any mediation or alcohol and offered that one of the girls had made up the accusations because she was having a problem with an addiction to opiates.

Danay Crossley denied witnessing or being a part of anything inappropriate.

Crossley is free after posting a court-set $150,000 bond and is due to appear March 10 in Norwich Superior Court.
