Groton — Firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out late Monday afternoon at the Mystic Marriott and led to the evacuation of guests and employees.

The fire appears to have originated in the laundry room around 4:19 p.m. and the cause is under investigation, according to Capt. Jason Pollard of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire District.

All employees and guests were allowed back into the hotel by Monday evening, and no injuries were reported, said Poquonnock Bridge Fire Chief Joe Winski.

Firefighters extinguished the first-alarm fire rather quickly, said Winski, but it took some time to clear the building, as firefighters checked throughout the building to make sure it was safe for people to re-enter.

Winski said the fire is believed to have heavily damaged machinery in the laundry room.

In addition to Poquonnock Bridge, nearby fire departments assisted, including the Naval Submarine Base, Old Mystic, Mystic, New London, City of Groton, and Gales Ferry. L+M Paramedics and Groton Town Police Department also responded.

The Poquonnock Bridge fire marshal remained on scene Monday evening to assess the fire.
