Juvenile arrested following threat against Kelly Middle School

Norwich — Police on Wednesday morning arrested a juvenile who allegedly posted threatening information regarding Kelly Middle School on social media.

The juvenile, whom police described as a 14-year-old boy, was charged with second-degree breach of peace.

Norwich Superintendent Abby Dolliver said the student posted the threat on Instagram. Another student saw the post and alerted his mother, who called the school.

Dolliver said she notified police and met them around 7:30 a.m. at the school, where officials quickly located and detained the boy who posted the threat. Dolliver would not say what grade the student is in. The boy told authorities the post was a joke, Dolliver said.

"Sometimes these kids don't take these things as seriously as they should," Dolliver said.

Police said their investigation revealed there was no credible threat against the school or any of its students.

All students were held in home room during the investigation, and Dolliver sent a message to all parents informing them of the incident.

Eighth-graders who were scheduled to go on their class field trip to Holiday Hill in Cheshire were delayed slightly, but were allowed to go, Dolliver said. Seventh-graders went to classes following the investigation.

Dolliver could not comment on pending disciplinary action, which could include suspension or expulsion.

"I will have to review the incident and the record and follow our disciplinary policies," Dolliver said.
