Man charged with drunken driving through Pawcatuck war memorial

Stonington — A Westerly man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs early Tuesday morning after police say he drove across the lawn of the World War I monument in Pawcatuck.

James Hall, 71, of 64 School St., Apt. 3, also was charged with failure to drive right.

He was released on a $600 bond and is scheduled to appear June 10 in New London Superior Court.

According to a police report, a witness called police at 4:03 a.m. to say a Ford Ranger pickup that was heading east on Pequot Trail made a hard right turn onto the lawn of the memorial at Route 1.

The witness said the pickup continued across the lawn and into the westbound lane of Route 1.

A police officer located and stopped the pickup near the intersection of South Anguilla Road.

The report states Hall admitted to drinking alcohol earlier in the evening and smelled of alcohol. He was arrested after a series of field sobriety tests.
