Waterford police Facebook page wrongly targeted

Waterford — The police department's Facebook page has received a lot of angry comments in the past few days about a controversial ban on pit bulls.

The problem: The ban in question is in Waterford, Mich., not Waterford, Conn.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Waterford Township, a town about halfway between Flint and Detroit, has an ordinance banning the ownership or possession of dogs identified as "pit bull terriers."

Resident Dan Tilley was issued a ticket in regards to his dog Diggy after a photo of them both smiling went viral last week.

An online petition to change the ordinance has more than 65,000 signatures, but a few petitioners took to the local Waterford Police Department's Facebook page to complain about the ordinance.

The department responded to each comment and clarified its state of residence in its own post Monday, wishing good luck to the dog.

The Facebook page for the police department in Waterford Township, New Jersey, has also received several negative ratings as a result of the ordinance in Michigan.

Police Chief Brett Mahoney said Tuesday the department gets complaints about other Waterford police departments about once a week.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
