Stonington police charge Mystic man with driving scooter while drunk

Stonington — For the second time in less than three weeks, police here have charged someone with driving a motor scooter while drunk.

At 5:55 p.m. Wednesday, police said they received a report that a man was trying to ride a scooter but repeatedly falling on East Main Street in Mystic.

When police arrived, they found a man lying on the ground near the scooter, which was parked in the road.

Two bystanders were assisting the man, later identified as Burke R. Bergman, 44, of 435 High St., Mystic.

According to a police report, there was a strong odor of alcohol on Bergman’s breath. When an officer asked Bergman how much he had to drink, he replied “way too much.”

He admitted to driving the scooter and told police he had been lying on the ground for 30 minutes.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and driving with a suspended license.

He was released on a $1,000 nonsurety bond and is slated to appear in New London Superior Court on June 27.

Bergman was convicted of fourth-degree sexual assault in 2012 in connection with a 2011 Norwich incident in which he inappropriately touched an 8-year-old boy in a shower.

He received a suspended prison sentence and probation in that case.

On May 29, police charged another Mystic man, who had two previous drunken-driving convictions, with driving under the influence when he crashed his motor scooter on Pequot Trail.
