Two rescued when boat strikes rocks, sinks in Pawcatuck River

Westerly — A man and a woman were rescued Saturday morning after a powerboat struck rocks and eventually sank in Little Narragansett Bay, according to the Watch Hill Fire Department.

Around 10:30 a.m., the Coast Guard received a request for help from the two people, who reported that their vessel had struck rocks near Seal Rocks off Osbrook Point, Watch Hill Fire Chief Robert Peacock said in a news release.

As rescue boats headed to the site, the people reported by marine radio that they had attempted to ground the boat in shallow water and were abandoning it.

Two Watch Hill Fire Department boats located the sinking boat and the two people about 100 feet from shore on the Westerly side of the Pawcatuck River. Response boats from the Coast Guard and Stonington Police arrived shortly thereafter.

The people were being assisted by two local boaters in a dinghy and were taken aboard the Watch Hill Fire Department boat for evaluation and treatment.

The man was treated for a minor hand injury and the woman was treated for dehydration.

Both were transported to the Watch Hill Yacht Club for further treatment and evaluation by Westerly Ambulance.

A small rescue boat from the Pawcatuck Fire Department also headed to the scene but was called back due to heavy sea conditions, Peacock said.
