New London police charge men with attempting to rob convenience store

New London — Police arrested two men Sunday night who allegedly attempted to rob a local Pump N Munch before being found at a nearby convenience store they also planned to rob, police said.

According to police, Steven Wotherspoon, 23, of Stafford Springs and Charles Cantley, 29, of North Haven were charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree robbery.

Police said they were called to the Pump N Munch at 4 Ocean Ave. at 10:07 p.m. Sunday, where a store clerk said two men, one of whom implied he had a weapon, had entered the store and passed a note demanding money.

The men, however, were unsuccessful in attempting to gain access to the cash register and left on foot.

Police said a good Samaritan told them the men had headed down Bank Street toward Waterford.

Officers later found the men at the convenience store at the Waterford-New London line, which police did not name but said the men had planned to rob as well.

They said Wotherspoon was in possession of a knife.

Both men were taken into custody without incident.

Information about their court dates was not immediately available.
