Coast Guard Station New London crew rescues pair near Plum Island

Members of Coast Guard Station New London and the Goshen Fire Department Wednesday night rescued a man and a woman from a boat that was taking on water near Plum Island.

According to members of Station New London, the pair were in a 15-20 foot center console boat that was taking on water because of a 3-foot fracture in its hull at the stern.

Coast Guard officials said they sent a crew of five around 7:30 or 8 p.m. to rescue the man and woman, whose ages were unavailable.

The crew put the duo in a side tow and took them to the Niantic River, officials said.

According to the Coast Guard, the man and woman said they believed the boat may have been cracked earlier in the day during a rocky launch from a beach.

Neither of the two had any injuries.
