Waterford crash closes road, causes power outage

Waterford — A car that crashed into a utility pole Sunday morning closed Great Neck Road for several hours and cut off power to some houses.

Waterford police said Laurie Burgess, 53, of Waterford, was driving on Great Neck Road when she crashed her 2008 Volvo into the pole about 8:30 a.m., police said.

Burgess was taken by ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

The crash caused power outages in some houses south of the crash, but Waterford police Sgt. Marc Balestracci said Eversource, ready to address possible outages due to the tropic storm headed toward the area, responded to the issue immediately.

Workers were still replacing the pole and some power lines Sunday afternoon.

Police are investigating the crash, Balestracci said.
