East Lyme — State police have identified the man whose remains were found near a 55-plus adult living community on Aug. 15.

James M. Balantic, 51, of 58 River Road, Danielson, is the deceased.

According to police, a passerby discovered a partial skull near the entrance of Sleepy Hollow Hills — located where Sleepy Hollow Road turns into Van Winkle Way — around 6:51 a.m. Aug. 15.

A deeper search into the woods revealed more skeletal remains, police said.

Officers and troopers from East Lyme and Troop E, as well as members of the Eastern District Major Crime Squad and the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, responded to the scene. At least one K-9 unit was put to use in the quiet, wooded neighborhood.

The cause of Balantic's death has not yet been released.

Police said Eastern District Major Crime Squad detectives continue to investigate.
