Infant girl killed in Plainfield crash

Plainfield — A 3-month-old girl was killed Saturday afternoon when her mother's car was struck by a tractor-trailer truck carrying bread products on Interstate 395 in the vicinity of Exit 29.

According to state police, a car driven by Erica Bedard, 25, of Danielson was struck in the rear by a tractor-trailer driven by Edward A. Stratton, 44, of Glastonbury.

In the rear of Bedard’s car was her infant daughter Ciera Dube, who was riding in a rear facing car seat. The infant was taken to The William W. Backus Emergency Care Center in Plainfield where she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Bedard was treated and released for minor injuries and Stratton was not hurt.

State police at Troop D said that Bedard’s car was in the right lane about 2:15 p.m. when it was hit by the tractor-trailer and forced into the shoulder where it came to the rest. The tractor-trailer careened to the right, left the road, continued down an embankment and into a densely wooded area. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage. The truck is owned by Automatic Rolls of New England which is in Dayville.

Traffic was detoured for seven hours while the crash was investigated. The investigation is continuing and anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper Teft at (860) 779-4900.
