Norwich man charged in alleged sexual assault, beating of woman on West Thames Street

Norwich — A Norwich man was arrested Monday in connection with the alleged sexual assault and beating of a 19-year-old woman on West Thames Street, according to a Norwich Police Department news release.

Edward J. Simpson, 34, of 92 Washington St., Apt. 1E, Norwich, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, criminal attempt at first-degree sexual assault, third-degree sexual assault, third-degree assault and interfering with police, the release said.

Norwich police officers and detectives began investigating after the woman reported she was assaulted on Sept. 18, the release said.

Police identified Simpson as a suspect and a New London Superior Court judge issued a warrant for his arrest Monday night, the release said.

Simpson was already in police custody, having been arrested on Monday afternoon for interfering with police, when detectives served him with the sexual assault arrest warrant, the release said.

He was held on a $250,000 bond and an additional $50,000 cash-only bond pending his appearance Tuesday in Norwich Superior Court.

Norwich police also are investigating another sexual assault that occurred about 3 a.m. on Sept. 17 in the city.

Anyone who may have seen a 2012 Buick Lacrosse with the Connecticut plate 4AUBRI involved in suspicious activity is urged to call (860) 886-5561, ext. 156.
