6-year-old child dead in Plainfield house fire

Plainfield — One child died in a Wednesday night house fire that ravaged a local home, according to police.

Police said the call reporting the fire at 10 Winsor Ave. came in at 10:43 p.m. Dispatchers informed police the 911 call line was open and thus the home’s occupants might be stuck inside.

Upon arrival, police, who were first on scene, observed a heavily involved structure fire. Police said they worked to remove one child and one adult female from the home through a window.

Along with the child and the adult female, an adult male resident of the home also was taken to The William W. Backus Hospital for treatment.

Crews additionally took Plainfield police Sgt. Craig Arruda and Officer Heriberto Rivera to Backus, where they were treated for smoke inhalation and later released.

Responders later found the 6-year-old deceased within the residence.

Members of the Plainfield, Moosup, Central Village and Atwood Hose fire departments responded to the scene. Responders from Canterbury Ambulance, Moosup American Legion Ambulance and American Ambulance also assisted.

The state police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit is investigating the fire in conjunction with the Plainfield fire marshal and police department.
