Motorcycle hits deer, car roof sliced off in Ledyard accidents

Ledyard — Two people were injured when a motorcycle struck a deer on Spicer Hill Road Tuesday night, Ledyard Police Sgt. Mike Ravenelle said.

In a separate accident, the roof of a Cadillac was sliced off when it ran into a truck towing a landscaping trailer at about 4 p.m. on Shewville Road, he said.

The motorcycle driver and passenger, both from Ledyard, were taken by ambulance to hospitals – one to William W. Backus Hospital and the other to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Their injuries were not life threatening, Ravenelle said.

The motorcycle was traveling east on Spicer Hill Road about 7 p.m. when the driver saw a deer and hit the brakes but could not avoid striking the animal, Ravenelle said.

A volunteer firefighter traveling in the opposite direction saw the accident and stopped to help the two until emergency medical technicians arrived.

Earlier Tuesday, a woman driving a Cadillac rear-ended a truck towing a large landscaping trailer. The truck was parked at the stop sign at Shewville Road and Route 214, Ravanelle said.

The impact sliced the roof off the Cadillac "like a sardine can," he said. There were no injuries.

"We were pretty amazed," he said.

Route 214 was closed for about 20 minutes after the accident, police said.
