Stonington — Pawcatuck firefighters extinguished a kitchen fire at a unit in the Brookside Village housing complex on Route 1 late Thursday afternoon.

Fire Chief Kevin Burns said firefighters responded to Building 110 at 4:45 p.m. after a fire that began in an oven spread to the rest of the kitchen. Residents evacuated and no one was injured.

Burns said fire damage was confined to the kitchen area but the remainder of the apartment sustained heavy smoke damage.
