Police arrest man for September armed robbery of North Stonington convenience store

State police have arrested a 41-year-old Norwich man in connection with an armed robbery in September of the Xtra-Mart convenience store at 226 Route 2 in North Stonington.

Eric S. Begin, 41, of 69 Providence St., was charged Monday with sixth-degree larceny and first-degree robbery.

During the Sept. 2 robbery of the Xtra-Mart in North Stonington, a clerk said a man wearing a mask and carrying a handgun entered the store and demanded money, according to the arrest warrant.

The suspect took about $140, before running away, according to the warrant. He told police he needed the money to support his crack cocaine habit and pay bills.

At the time, state troopers searched the area, and then detectives from the Eastern District Major Crime Squad took over.

Begin had been charged in September with first-degree robbery, carrying a dangerous weapon and sixth-degree larceny for allegedly robbing at gunpoint on Sept. 5 a Shell Gas Station at 170 Taftville-Occum Road in Norwich.
