Norwich — Police have taken into custody the city man they believe robbed a Bridge Street deli Saturday night and fled the scene.

Michael Baker, 29, is the man who allegedly was involved with the armed robbery at Harry’s Occum Deli at 1 Bridge St. Police issued a release later Tuesday evening saying that Baker had learned he was a suspect in the robbery and turned himself in on an outstanding violation of probation warrant. He was charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree larceny, interfering with an officer, carrying a dangerous weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, police said.

He was processed on those charges and was being held on a $300,000 court-set bond. He is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on Wednesday morning.

During the robbery, which occurred about 10:50 p.m. Saturday, police said a man displaying a gun took an unspecified amount of cash from the store and ran. An officer who happened to be nearby yelled at the man to drop the gun, but he did not and continued running, according to police.

At one point, police said, the man pointed his gun at them. They in turn fired shots at the man. Police said their bullets did not appear to hit the man.

Once police lost sight of the man, they brought in K-9 teams to help search for him. The search was unsuccessful.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the robbery to contact Det. Harrison Formiglio of the the Norwich Police Detective Division at (860) 886-5561, ext. 3137.
