No new details in fatal Montville police shooting
Montville — State police and the Windham County State’s Attorney’s Office still are investigating the fatal shooting of a man living in a Route 85 motel by a Montville police officer Sunday.
Police have not yet released the name of the officer or officers involved in the incident, which left Val Thomas, 53, dead and one officer with a head laceration.
An officer shot Thomas after he took an officer’s Taser and hit the officer on the head with it, police said.
The police were responding to a call from the motel’s owner that Thomas was refusing to pay a $250 bill on Sunday afternoon.
In Connecticut, fatal police shootings or other police “use-of-force” deaths are handled by prosecutors from a judicial district outside the one where the death occurred.
Chief State's Attorney Kevin Kane announced that policy in 2015 during the investigation into the death of a Branford resident, David Werblow, who died after being shot with a police Taser.
Police confirmed Thomas’ identity Tuesday, but the state's Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said it was not ready to release results of his autopsy.
A state police spokesman said Monday that the investigation would include a look at whether the officer complied with the Montville police department's policy on firearms and use of physical force.
