Teens lead police from Stonington to Ledyard in stolen car

Ledyard — Two teenagers who allegedly led Stonington, Groton Town and local police on a chase in a stolen car and then ran into the woods Sunday night are facing several charges, according to Ledyard police.

Stonington police Lt. Michael Peckham said the chase began in Stonington. He said police were patrolling the area of East Grand Street after a resident reported people were rummaging through cars there about 8:53 p.m.

Peckham said an officer noticed a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Litchfield County and attempted to stop it, but the vehicle took off.

According to Ledyard police Lt. Ken Creutz, Stonington police broke off the chase, but Groton police picked it up not long afterward because the vehicle’s information had been broadcast to area departments.

Soon after Groton Town police also stopped their pursuit of the vehicle, a Ledyard officer spotted the car on state Route 12, got behind it and noted that it looked like it was about to pull over.

Instead, Creutz said, the car pulled into the drive leading to the Pheasant Run Condominiums, its driver apparently unaware the road ended in a cul-de-sac.

Creutz said three teens jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the woods when they realized they were stuck. At that point, the car rolled backward into the Ledyard police cruiser, causing minor damage.

According to Creutz, a 16-year-old girl who was in the vehicle came out of the woods and surrendered not long after running into the woods. She is not facing charges in the incident.

Ledyard police brought in two K-9 units, including one from Stonington, to search for the two other teens — a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy.

Creutz said he sent an Everbridge alert to about 112 residents within 2,500 feet of the condos at 1742 Route 12 to let them know there was police activity nearby and to lock their doors. Creutz said he sent the alert primarily because he didn’t know who had been in the vehicle and what kind of threat they might pose.

After about one hour and 20 minutes, police backed off the search but remained in the area. The boys eventually came out of the woods on their own, Creutz said.

Ledyard police charged both boys with interfering with a police officer. Stonington police charged the 16-year-old boy with disobeying the signal of an officer.

Creutz said state police likely will lodge charges against at least one of the teens in connection with the stolen vehicle and Groton Town police also will charge them in relation to the pursuit.
