Montville man goes to prison for sex with teen he met online

A 37-year-old Uncasville man who had illegal sexual contact with a 15-year-old area boy he met online in October 2015 began a nine-month prison sentence Wednesday after he was sentenced in New London Superior Court.

Luther Huffman of 92 Depot Road had pleaded guilty to risk of injury to a minor. Under a plea agreement worked out between prosecutor Theresa Anne Ferryman and defense attorney Jessica A. Coderre, he will be on probation for five years following his release and is required to make a $220 donation to a charitable organization. Judge Hillary B. Strackbein imposed the sentence and issued a standing criminal protective order prohibiting Luther from having contact with the victim for the remainder of his life.

The teen's mother delivered a victim impact statement at the sentencing.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, the boy told detectives at Troop E that he had made contact with five adult men on different dates after advertising on websites such as KIK, Grinder and Skype, that he was seeking sexual encounters. The 15-year-old said he used his smartphone to contact the men and disclosed his true age.

He said that after making contact with Huffman, who identified himself as Kelin Reij, the two made arrangements to meet at the Regal Cinemas in Waterford. Huffman took the teen to his home, where they watched pornographic videos and performed sexual acts on each other. The teen said Huffman's husband came into the bedroom at one point and left after saying he didn't realize Huffman had company. He said Huffman drove him back to the movie theater and his parents were unaware he had left to meet with a man.

Confronted by police, Huffman said the teen had described himself as a student actor at Connecticut College. He said he believed the teen was 18 and that he did not ask him for identification. He initially told the investigators that they had just been watching Netflix videos but eventually admitted to the sexual acts, according to the affidavit.

Another man who allegedly had sexual contact with the teen under similar circumstances has a case pending in the same court.
