Small blaze at Mystic substation causes temporary power outage

Mystic — A small fire at the Mystic substation knocked out power in the area for about two hours and set off a series of false alarms early Monday, according to Mystic Fire Chief Frank Hilbert.

Hilbert said the fire at the 148 Greenmanville Ave. substation ignited in a transfer switch about 12:25 a.m.

Erring on the side of caution, the station shut off power to deal with the fire, thus causing the outage for nearby customers. Hilbert said multiple alarms activated because of the outage, but no other fires were found.

Hilbert said Mystic fire officials called in the Naval Submarine Base FAST team as well as other mutual aid partners to assist with the alarms.

No one was injured in the substation fire.
