Police investigate North Stonington shooting as homicide
North Stonington — One person died after suffering injuries during a shooting in the area of Lantern Hill Road, state police said Wednesday afternoon.
State police said in a social media post shortly before 4:30 p.m. that they were responding to a shooting in North Stonington. They said investigators from the Eastern District Major Crime Squad were en route and told people to avoid the area.
State police said late Wednesday night that the victim had died and the incident is being investigated as a homicide. In an earlier Twitter post, state police said they were talking to a “person of interest” and there was no threat to the community.
A police cruiser was blocking off a driveway at 628 Lantern Hill Road, where several other cruisers and the Major Crime Squad truck had arrived. Officers at the scene said there would be a news conference, but state police spokesperson Kelly Grant said later Wednesday evening that no conference had yet been scheduled.
The heavily wooded area near Long Pond is usually “pretty quiet,” according to nearby resident Warren Speh.
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call state police investigators at (860) 870-5595.
